Recently, the Huayudong Bridge on the G320 highway, Guizhou’s first “basket-handle” type highway bridge, was awarded the Gustav Lindenthal Medal by the International Bridge Conference (IBC). This prestigious prize honors outstanding recently completed bridge projects worldwide and is regarded as the Nobel Prize of the bridge industry. Located in Qingzhen City on the Guiyang–Huangguoshu Expressway, the Huayudong Bridge is a large-scale structure crossing the Hongfeng Lake Wetland Park and a drinking water source protection area. In 2019, to improve service quality and traffic capacity, the original prestressed concrete truss composite arch bridge with a main span of 150 meters was demolished and replaced with a half-through concrete-filled steel tubular basket-handle arch bridge with a main span of 180 meters. The new bridge has a total length of 269.6 meters and was opened to traffic on June 29, 2021.

The completion of the Huayudong Bridge better meets public travel needs and enhances the scenic depth and visual layers at the bridge location, making it a stunning landmark over Hongfeng Lake. To ensure the safe operation of the bridge, Toehold Technology’s products and implementation team have also become part of this remarkable scene—let’s take a look at their outstanding contribution!

As a half-through concrete-filled steel tubular arch bridge, the Huayudong Bridge has a relatively complex structure and is susceptible to various defects under multiple factors. Without timely warnings, these could endanger the bridge and transportation safety. Therefore, establishing an operational monitoring system is essential, with data collection being the first critical step. In the development of the bridge’s monitoring system, self-developed smart monitoring hardware from Toehold Technology was used to collect and transmit structural monitoring data. This system provides real-time insights into stress, strain, displacement changes, and dynamic responses of key measuring points under external loads such as vehicle traffic, wind, and temperature.
During implementation, Toehold’s project team overcame challenges such as working at heights, road-related construction, and special installation requirements, successfully completing equipment installation and debugging within the scheduled period. To date, the overall system is operating normally with stable data transmission, earning high recognition from the project owner.
Toehold Technology will continue to deepen its expertise in structural health monitoring, providing more bridges with professional technology and products to ensure safe operation, support health assessment, and enable digital maintenance decision-making.
